5 EUROPEAN CITIES TO VISIT THIS SEPTEMBER — IF YOU LOVE MUSIC, FILM & ART

September is one of the best months to travel through Europe if music, cinema and contemporary art are part of the reason you travel. From the Venice Lido to the streets of Hamburg and the galleries of Linz, these five cities offer very different cultural experiences — and all of them have something significant happening this month.

There is a particular rhythm to Europe in September.

The summer crowds begin to disappear, temperatures become more comfortable for walking, and the cultural calendar suddenly becomes crowded again. Film festivals return, concert venues fill up, museums launch new exhibitions and entire city centres become temporary stages.

For travellers who prefer discovering a city through its culture rather than simply checking off landmarks, September may be the most interesting month of the year.

Here are five European cities worth putting on the map.

01 — VENICE, ITALY 🇮🇹

WHAT: Venice International Film Festival
WHEN: September 2–12, 2026
WHERE: Lido di Venezia
BEST FOR: Film, cinema history, architecture, photography and culture

There are few places in the world where cinema and the city are connected as naturally as Venice.

The 83rd Venice International Film Festival is taking place on the Lido from September 2 to 12, once again bringing international cinema, filmmakers, actors and audiences to one of Europe’s most recognisable cultural destinations. The festival is organised by La Biennale di Venezia.

The 2026 edition includes films from some of the most established names in contemporary cinema, while the festival also continues to explore new forms of visual storytelling through Venice Immersive.

But Venice is much more than the red carpet.

The Lido becomes the centre of the film world for ten days, while the historic centre remains one of Europe’s most extraordinary urban environments — a place where the journey between two cultural events can involve a vaporetto, a narrow alley, a bridge and a centuries-old square.

September also brings another major Venetian tradition: the Regata Storica, held on September 6, when the Grand Canal becomes the setting for a historic water procession and traditional rowing races.

MPM TRAVEL IDEA

Don’t make Venice only a festival trip.

Combine a film screening with a day exploring Dorsoduro, Giudecca and Cannaregio, visit one of the city’s contemporary-art institutions and leave time simply to walk.

Venice is for travellers who want their cinema with history attached.

02 — LINZ, AUSTRIA 🇦🇹

WHAT: Ars Electronica Festival 2026
WHEN: September 9–13, 2026
WHERE: Linz city centre
THEME: Negotiating Humanity
BEST FOR: Digital art, AI, technology, music and experimental culture

If Venice represents the history of cinema, Linz represents its possible future.

From September 9 to 13, Ars Electronica transforms Linz into a large-scale meeting point for art, technology and society. The 2026 theme is Negotiating Humanity, exploring questions about humanity in a world increasingly shaped by technology.

The festival spreads across several locations rather than being confined to one venue. Its main hubs include OK QUARTER, DANUBE TRIANGLE and MED CAMPUS.

The programme includes exhibitions, performances, concerts, workshops and conferences, creating an environment where art, science and technology constantly overlap.

For visitors, there is also a practical advantage: the festival’s five-day pass includes access to festival locations and several museums, while public transport in Linz’s core zone is included with the full Festivalpass.

MPM TRAVEL IDEA

Linz is a particularly good destination if you want something different from the traditional European art circuit.

Come for Ars Electronica, but stay long enough to explore the Danube, Ars Electronica Center and Lentos Kunstmuseum.

This is the destination for travellers who want to ask not only what is art? but also:

What happens when art meets AI, science and technology?

WHAT: Reeperbahn Festival
WHEN: September 16–19, 2026
WHERE: St. Pauli / Reeperbahn, Hamburg
BEST FOR: New music, live shows, emerging artists and nightlife

If your idea of a music festival involves discovering an artist before everyone else knows their name, Hamburg deserves a place on your September itinerary.

The Reeperbahn Festival runs from September 16 to 19 and describes itself as Europe’s biggest club festival and a platform for international pop culture.

Its biggest difference from a conventional festival is the location.

There is no single enormous field surrounded by fences.

Instead, Hamburg itself becomes the festival environment.

Clubs, concert venues and other locations around St. Pauli and the Reeperbahn become stages, turning one of Europe’s most famous nightlife districts into a concentrated music discovery zone.

The festival also brings together artists, music professionals and the wider international music industry, making it particularly interesting for people working in music and media.

MPM TRAVEL IDEA

The best strategy here is simple:

Don’t plan every hour.

Choose a few artists you absolutely want to see, then leave room for discoveries.

Walk between venues. Go into a club you’ve never heard of. Follow the crowd.

That’s the Reeperbahn experience.

And when the concerts finish, Hamburg’s St. Pauli district is already waiting outside.

WHAT: San Sebastián International Film Festival
WHEN: September 18–26, 2026
EDITION: 74th
BEST FOR: Cinema, gastronomy, architecture and coastal travel

There are film festivals where the city disappears behind the event.

San Sebastián is the opposite.

Here, the city is part of the experience.

The 74th San Sebastián International Film Festival takes place from September 18 to 26, bringing international filmmakers and audiences to the Basque coastal city.

The festival’s 2026 programme includes filmmakers such as Fatih Akin, Lukas Dhont, Jesse Eisenberg, Nicole Garcia, Pablo Larraín, Martin McDonagh and Cristian Mungiu.

The festival combines major premieres and competition titles with sections dedicated to new directors, Latin American cinema, classics, documentaries and culinary cinema.

But the reason San Sebastián works so well as a travel destination is what happens between screenings.

You can watch a film in the morning, walk along La Concha, have lunch in the Old Town, explore the city’s architecture and return for an evening screening.

Few major film festivals offer that combination so naturally.

MPM TRAVEL IDEA

Stay close enough to the centre to walk.

Make cinema the anchor of the trip, but don’t treat the festival as the entire itinerary.

San Sebastián is one of those rare destinations where film, food, sea and city life naturally belong together.

WHAT: La Mercè 2026
WHEN: September 23–27, 2026
WHERE: Multiple locations across Barcelona
BEST FOR: Music, street art, popular culture, traditions and city life

Barcelona offers something completely different.

Instead of travelling to a festival venue, you arrive in a city that is itself the venue.

La Mercè, Barcelona’s major annual city festival, takes place from September 23 to 27. The programme combines live music, street arts, traditional Catalan culture and performances across different parts of the city.

Music is one of the central elements of the 2026 edition, with more than 100 concerts spread across the city. The programme includes artists from around 30 countries.

One of this year’s most interesting cultural elements is Shanghai as the guest city, marking 25 years of the Barcelona–Shanghai sister-city relationship. More than 100 artists connected with Shanghai and the Chinese community in Barcelona are expected to participate.

The festival also includes street theatre, traditional celebrations, visual performances and public events, meaning that you don’t necessarily need a conventional festival ticket to experience it.

Don’t stay in one neighbourhood.

Build your days around different parts of Barcelona and allow the festival to determine where you go next.

La Mercè is particularly good for travellers who want culture without the feeling of being inside a conventional festival.

SO, WHERE SHOULD YOU GO?

The five cities offer five completely different experiences.

There is an interesting geographical rhythm here.

You could theoretically build an entire September cultural road trip through Europe:

Of course, doing all five in one month would require a serious amount of travel.

But that’s not really the point.

The bigger idea is that September offers something increasingly rare: the opportunity to choose a city based on culture rather than simply tourism.

Venice is for cinema.

Linz is for the future.

Hamburg is for discovering music.

San Sebastián is for film by the sea.

Barcelona is for experiencing culture in the streets.

And that may be the best way to travel in September:

Don’t ask only where you want to go.

Ask what you want to experience when you get there.
