“Stay Away From Drugs and Alcohol”: Marco Mendoza Ahead of His Belgrade Show on September 4

Marco Mendoza (born May 3, 1963, in San Diego, raised in Tijuana, Mexico) is one of the most recognizable rock bassists of his generation — a musician whose bass playing has run through Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, Blue Murder, Black Star Riders, Ted Nugent’s band, The Dead Daisies, and Journey. He started his career in 1989 on drummer Bill Ward’s solo album (“Ward One: Along the Way”), and since 2025 has also been playing in the Satch/Vai Band, alongside guitar legends Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. Alongside his career as a sideman, Mendoza has released four solo albums and is the author of an illustrated book about his life in music, “Showtime.”

He’s returning to Belgrade on September 4, at Club Fest, as part of his “New Direction” tour, on which he’s presenting his new album — his second time in front of the same audience, following his April 2022 show. That was an intimate but high-energy concert: the crowd greeted Mendoza with an ovation, and the night closed with an encore of “Sweetest Emotions.” Mendoza also recalled on that occasion that he first met Serbian audiences back in 2003, as a member of Whitesnake, at the Akademik Stadium in Sofia.

Ahead of his visit, Mendoza spoke to MPM in a short interview about what still drives him after nearly four decades in the business.

After so many years performing on the biggest rock stages, what still excites you the most before going on stage?

Playing my own music has opened some new energy for me, and it’s very rewarding!!

How would you describe the musical direction you are exploring at this stage of your career?

All directions, but trying to focus on the entertainment side of my shows. I like for the fans to walk away with a smile on their faces and feeling like there was something special going on stage.

What have you learned from working with musicians such as John Sykes, David Coverdale, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai?

Inspiration and patience and focus.

Looking back at the beginning of your career, what advice would you give to your younger self?

Stay away from drugs and alcohol!! Tobacco too!

After more than three decades in music, is there still a musical dream you would like to fulfill?

Yes! I would like to think that we are making a difference in this world of ours… and to keep learning and growing… and being inspired and maybe inspiring other people.
